I League 2017-18: Mohun Bagan drops points again after the appointment of Sankarlal Chakraborty as Head Coach

This year has been a roller coaster ride for Mohun Bagan as they could not perform to their standards yet again when the team lost at Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday against Minerva Punjab. Minerva Punjab has been performing above expectations this season as they find themselves in the top spot and is one of the serious contenders for the title.

The Mariners went down 0-2 in the early stage both goals scored by the Bhutanese sensation Chencho Gyeltshen.

The Match Winner Chencho

The team looked to make a comeback but their disappointing display in the final third was the reason for their loss. Sony Norde’s absence was felt in the Mohun Bagan attack as they were not efficient in front of the goal and Sankarlal Chakraborty admitted it to as he said,”The problem is not in midfield. The problem is we are not getting goals. The midfield is supplying balls. Dipanda tried within his limits. Even Naro Hari did but we simply weren’t able to convert.”

Things turned worse for the Maroon Brigade as they missed a penalty and it was claimed as the ‘turning point’ of the match.

After this great result Minerva Punjab FC Coach Khogen Singh expressed his satisfaction and claimed that football is based on mind games and his team were mentally superior than the home side.

Nevertheless, there is a bad news for the Minerva Punjab FC fans as Chencho has suffered a Groin injury and the team will miss his services for sometime now.

We are in the matchday 9 and there are two more games to be played on Friday where the Kerala side Gokulam will host the promising Indian arrows side. Indian Arrows had lost to Gokulam in their previous encounter as they lost 0-2. Meanwhile, Aizawl FC would like to continue their winning run as they face Chennai City at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium,Aizawl.

Predicting I-League games is one of the most difficult things in football. This is due to the high competition in the league. Every team is trying to give their best and except Minerva none of the teams are looking consistent. This is the reason of their top spot hold and if they can keep the run going then no one can stop them from lifting this year’s I-League trophy. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal on the other hand have dropped considerably and it is time to pick up their performances and run for the title. With Sanjoy Sen leaving, the Mariners will be wondering how their new coach does in this tough time.

This was their second drop of points with Sankarlal Chakraborty in charge and now if he fails to perform, it will be interesting to see what happens in the near future in the club. Of course, it is early days for the new manager but the time he has stepped in is very crucial and if the team can’t respond now it will be a big ask for them to win the title and have to stay another season without it.
